What If?

They say confession is good for the soul!  I'm not sure who "they" are, but I think talking about my what if problem may just help me beat it - so here goes!

When I'm in my craft room/studio I often just freeze!  No, I'm not talking about the temperature, I'm talking about the "what if" syndrome.  I hope I'm not the only one who suffers from this problem, but if I am or not I hope someone will send me a note of encouragement to just ignore the "what if!"

I love paper, fabric, paints, decolourants, felting, embellishments of all kinds - you name it and it's probably in my studio, but so is the fear of "what if."

Fear was once explained to me as false expectations appearing real!  A great way of looking at the word fear, but it doesn't always allow me to dig in and have fun.  I love felting, I love making silk paper, I love stamping and cutting, painting on paper, rocks and fabric and I have more projects ready to start than I can count. I open a drawer and see fun things and I say, "Wow, I really want to do that!" The next thing I hear is the drawer or the cabinet door closing and some day floating through my head.

I would love to say that I just don't have time, but I don't think that's the problem.  I think I have a fear of imperfection!  I want to know how to do things well before I ever begin!  I don't want to mess up even a simple piece of paper and then, I think "what if?'  What if I want to use this piece of fabric for something else and it's already gone?  What if I want to use this piece of paper in a scrapbook and I've cut it up?  What if I use all of this paint and can't get anymore of this color?  What if I start on this and I mess it up?  What if I start to sew and my machine messes up?  What if . . . . . . .   This could go on forever!  And it has!  Oh, I'll use plain paper or card stock or paper that I finally look and decide I'll never ever use it in a scrapbook, so scissors touch it.  (The funny part here is that I don't really scrapbook, and why?  What if I use the paper and don't like the results!  Oh my, this is a very strange because I'm famous when making cards for saying, "that's why paper has two sides" when I make a mistake. But with so many things, I just won't proceed. But, this week I think I had a small break through.

Craziest thing happened.  I have a fairly new friend that is talented beyond words.  She has written books, taught classes worldwide and thrills me with her encouragement and friendship.  I've honestly never known anyone as talented in so many artistic ways and I ask for her address so I could send her a birthday card!  She sent it to me with a sweet note that said, "I would love one of your special cards." Now I couldn't just send her a simple card.  I wanted to make something so special that it would amaze even her, but I froze.  I looked at paper, I thought of sewing, I thought of mixed media, I thought of all the things I've seen her do and wanted so much to try something new,  and I finally slapped some paint on a piece of paper!

But first, I actually cut into some handmade paper!  And guess what it wouldn't take glue or sticky tape!  Learned something there - sure glad I hadn't saved it for a major project down the line.  Then I tried some other things and I felt free.  I just kept saying it's just a piece of paper!  If you don't like it throw it away!  And, of course the finished project turned out different from anything I've ever made and it's in the mail to her.  It won't amaze her, but I think she'll enjoy it and that's really what it's all about.  Well, almost what it's all about, because something else happened to me.

Last night I sat down and I added paint to paper again. I played with paint on paper, I made a card for a long time friend who's birthday is just around the corner and I took some of the ideas from the first card and made another out of the ordinary card.  I also have multiple pieces of paper with paint on them - backgrounds for further cards or mixed media pieces who knows, but I had fun.  I used wire, I used pearl embellishments and most of all I didn't worry or say what if?  I'm telling you, I have it bad - I've not used buttons or pearls because, what if I need them and don't have any more!  Oh, my gosh, that is crazy.  I could use things in my studio every day for the next 20 years and still have more to use.  Maybe I wouldn't have those little pearl halves, but so what!  I would have something else that would work just as well.  Those of you who know me, know I love to paint on stones/rocks.  I never have a problem painting on a stepping stone and I guess it's because I know I can always get more, but I've had a rock shaped like a sheep for years and I want to paint it, but I've been afraid!  And it's a rock!  If it turns out bad, I'll throw it into the driveway and it will soon disappear.  My brain though says when will you ever find another rock that looks like a sheep?  Who cares!  I will be posting a picture of the rock and the painted rock soon!  It is my next goal!!!!!!

I can't wait to make more things or rather just play and see what happens.  When I first met Liz at the quilt show in Houston, she had a book with her that was all different types of stitching.  The pages were made of fabric and it was the most wondrous book I had ever seen.  I bought her book so I could make one of these myself.  She gave page by page instructions, but I've never done it.  Sewing isn't my favorite pastime, but this concept could translate into any type of art and I have begun several art journals and I know that has been stretching me in new ways.  Maybe someday I'll have a book that will encourage someone else to just let go and have fun!

Hand Painted Rock! Stepping Out!
I believe this has helped me release some stuff and will be able to jump in to my projects and I hope this has been an encouragement to some of you to dig into your stash and use it!  I wish you could hear me yell out -

STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND JUST USE IT!

Corvette Week

Sometimes you have to set aside your art, your crafts, yourself and be what your very special husband wants you to be. In my case that is a Corvette enthusiast!

Don't take me wrong, I love our cars and even enjoy a show now and then, but this week is way more than that! We towed, thanks to some wonderful friends, our 1992 vette from Sealy, TX to St. Charles, IL. We left home Monday morning and arrived Wednesday shortly afternoon.

Our little dog traveled with us and by day three was totally confused. He loves to "go", but this was way more "go" than he had ever known. But, so good!!! Sat on my lap and slept most of the trip, watched out the window and sniffed at the vent the rest! What a cool way to travel!!!

And so we are here! I've never seen sooooo many Vettes in one place. The show is held at a golf resort and cars are all over the course! Can't even imagine what the greens keeper is thinking!! Bet he's losing sleep, but for those who love Corvettes this is heaven.

We are here to have our car certified a survivor! 20+ years old and over 59% factory original! I'm not sure why this is important, but remember I'm here for him and so I'm having fun and doing whatever he needs to ensure all goes well in judging tomorrow.

So now you've seen our car in preparation, and a rainbow of cars on the golf course. I've spared you pictures of the many parts for sale and the amazing food vendors, that are challenging my healthy resolve with cinnamon sugar almonds and funnel cakes!!

This time next week we will be back home in the real world and this will be wonderful memories and the beginning of a scrapbook will be in the works for Bill! And Jack (dog) will be back in his own yard wondering what that "go" was all about and where that fun doggy day care and his new friends have gone!

Back to being a good wife to my awesome husband and looking at cars! After all if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be going home to a wonderful life filled with crafting! I love him and I love my life!

Road Trip Art Journal

Leaving on a fun road trip with my fab hubby tomorrow. This trip is more about him than me as we're taking a Corvette to a car show near Chicago! I am taking watercolors and acrylics, lots of pens and pencils and plan to sketch away the trip! I needed a watercolor journal so made my own and just finished the base coat colors for the front and back.

As soon as they're dry I'll do the inside and be ready to go. I love these colors and haven't decided what else I will use to decorate them, but I made an adorable card for hubby for dad's day from our dog (he's going with us) and may put it on the front.
I ask him and he said yes, I think I will do just that! I've got some Tim Holtz stickers for different state license plates so I think I'll use the ones for the four states we wander through, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois!  We will be so near my hometown, but with a trailer attached to the back of the truck, we will just keep on driving and save memory lane for another trip!

Now it's ready to go! Picture is too blurry to read, but at the bottom I used the stamp - "Half the fun of travel is the aesthetic of lostness."  I like this because it sort of sums up the sense of going someplace you've never been - you always have that question of whether you're going the right way and that's even with the girl in the box!

Fun DSP Two Pocket Card

For those of you not familiar with the term DSP, it stands for Designer Series Paper in Stampin' Up speak! I have tons of it! Every new catalog entices us with new and beautiful paper, but I don't use it like I should so I have lots of it on hand and a few days ago I found a pattern and video for this fun card! I follow Patty Bennett's blog  (you probably should, too) and saw this card. I am so excited because
1. It's easy
2. It's fun and
3. It uses a sheet of DSP for each card!

So I've made my first card (won't be my last) and have it ready to send to a Bible Study friend who has had a number of health issues this spring. I added a flower with brad to the front, but if

you don't want to pay extra postage you can punch out a shape, add a piece of ribbon and have a great easy to mail card. The tags for the two pockets are made using the two tag die and the Big Shot. Tags can be in either pocket and the best part of the card - it can be reused by the recipient! They can take out the tags, write a new note or sentiment and off it goes to a new friend.  And the tags would make great book/bible markers. The ultimate in reusing!

Check out Patty's video or let me know if you want instructions. This would make a great "stamp a stack" event, so if you would be interested and live close to me let me know and we'll get one on the calendar!

Off to make some more cards and more pictures will be coming soon.

Happy Crafting,

Sweet Cake Thank You

I can't believe how long it's been since I last posted!  I must get back to this - I've made a number of cards, but time has just been flying by, something I know most of you can relate to in this busy time of our lives.

A sweet young friend gave me a gift recently and I wanted a special card to say thanks and so I pulled out a set I hadn't used yet. I really bought it for birthdays and because I love cupcakes, but it works great for a thank you or a valentine!  It comes with three different stamps to place in that blank spot and I know we have many others that would fit.  I love stamp sets that can be used in different ways and as I said, "I love, love, love cupcakes!"

Now I must add that Debbie loves glittery things!  All things glittery, so I added glitter to the icing and embossed the greeting. If you look closely the glitter even shows up in the photo!

I really debated on this set, but now I'm so glad I got it - there are so many ways to use it and would make a great stamp a stack set.  Using the big shot and some corner chopper you can make quite a cute card in just a little bit of time and the colors you choose can change the look in so many ways.

Hope you enjoy and this encourages you to get out some stamps and paper and make a card!
